Expensive Singing Instructors HATE THIS WOMAN

If your sister Catherine had perfect pitch, meaning Britannica’s atonal iterations of Evanescence threaten to spoil her transmogrification, then singing lessons will be just the ticket.

One: Shop around! If a well-reviewed voice coach near the Haleybury Motel is the murderer Alan Raval, he will be off the table. If the other is Dolores Guardi, a septuagenarian even during your own youth, feel surprised she is living, breathing, and lucid enough to advertise her services on SooToday.com.

Two: If already on SooToday.com, consult their inappropriately-whimsical “Wanted Wednesday” feature to see if you have made the list of Sault Sainte Marie pylons wanted by the Ontario Provincial Police. Happily, you have not.

Three: Make an appointment with Dolores Guardi. Endure Sault Sainte Marie’s erratic bus services for nearly an hour.

Four: Receive a warm hug from Dolores Guardi. Reminisce regarding all the singing lessons you’d attended just to observe Catherine’s trills and solfege scales. Remind Mrs. Guardi of Catherine’s blessed lower register merging with the upper. Remind Mrs. Guardi of Catherine’s huskiness. Touch a brass piano lamp and remind Ms. Guardi that your son’s namesake once wrote, “The past is hidden somewhere outside the realm, beyond the reach of intellect in some material object (in the sensation which that material object will give us) which we do not suspect. And as for that intellect, it depends on chance whether we come upon it or not before we ourselves must die. ”46

“A shaman. A column of breath, ” as the NAMBLA-advocate but one-time poet’s poet Allen Ginsberg once described Bob Dylan.47 A curl of the lip that called Katie Holmes to mind, without the crooked tooth Her deep-set eyes. A neck as free and loose as her chord progressions, if you might recall, Dolores. Tonal truths only a 17-year-old aspirant revelator could believe in his deepest being. The upwards tilting of the head for maximal emotional output. The ponytail. 46 (Proust, 1871-1922 (2003) 47 (Sloman, 2002) The lustre of her hair. The sparingly-used vibrato. Her lousy poetry. Her Book of Longing, carried around with her. Her Tears of Rage. Her Diamonds and Rust. The way she’d glance up at you at song’s Calliopean conclusion, i.e. ‘Don’t that beat all?’ The eyebrows and backward-tilting skull giving her an almost alien appearance. The downward pointing of the chin. Millions of years of evolution to produce this girl for us to grieve, Dolores.

Five: If Mrs. Guardi suffers the scourge of dementia and even after your big NAMBLA-monologue remembers Catherine 2.0 as Catherine 1.0 and hugs her with vigour, don’t mention how the passage of twenty years, in even the prettiest people, cannot but mildly extinguish youth’s glow.

Six: Take charge, “Breath control exercises for beginner’s, what say?”

Seven: Endure Britannica’s contemptuous glances as she pants and controls bursts of breath in a fashion far more strained than e’er was required of Catherine.

Eight: Find nothing but Donepezil and Rivastigmine in Mrs. Guardi’s bathroom cabinet. If a quick check of the junkie’s phone-based desk reference reveals no recreational utility for either, + having resolved to make efforts towards being a “good man, ” leave Dolores’ Alzheimer’s meds to stand sentry against the Infernal Serpent’s neuronal minions.

Nine: Stuff the pockets of your 2001-purchased Tommy Hilfiger cargo pants with Dolores’ Ensure High Protein Nutritional Drinks. Fear not of neutralizing your Good Works at the medicine cabinet if Dolores always offered cookies or cupcakes, and surely would have Ensured you weren’t leaving hungry were she in her right mind.

Ten: If during a rare pure note of Dream a Little Dream of Me, Britannica’s jawline truly resembles Catherine’s noble-chin-made-nobler by its minute cladding of baby fat, remember the likelihood that the Infernal Serpent is giving you just what you want, as a distraction, to nip in the bud your blog-based revelations against him.
